Best yoga poses for beginners

There are so many brilliant yoga for beginners poses you can start with, including;

  1. Mountain pose - Tadasana

This pose looks super easy! Why is that? Because it looks like you’re just standing. But Mountain pose is the foundation for all the other standing poses and inversions. And there is still loads going on in the body that you can pay attention to.

Stand up tall and bring activation into your legs and feet. When you do this you’ll work your torso and legs, whilst grounding through the feet at the same time. Mountain pose is a beautiful pose for building confidence and easing anxiety. I find it a beautiful pose to pause in mid-way through the Hatha Flow class to revisit our intention and find a moment to return to the breath.

2. Downward-Facing Dog - Adho Mukha Svanasana

Downward facing dog is a well-known posture but one that takes a lot of work. It’s a great one for beginners because there are so many ways to modify this posture that all levels of yogis can practise it. Downward facing dog elongates your spine, stretches your back leg muscles, and aids digestion. Since it’s a mild inversion (head below heart), it can release stress, help with headaches, and calm the nervous system.

I like to encourage my students who are newer to yoga to bend deeply into the knees so they can feel the spine straighten and lengthen and also ask them to think heels to the back of the room rather than to the floor.

3. Child’s Pose - Balasana

Child’s pose is one of my favourite yoga poses and is accessible to all levels of yoga, especially beginners. During your yoga practice Child’s pose is a great pose to come to if you want to rest and reset your nervous system. If you are feeling like you need to spend some time coming back to the breath or taking a moment to pause then this is the pose to come back to time and time again,

4. Forward Fold - Uttanasana

There are so many benefits to a standing forward fold from stretching into the hips, hamstrings, and calves, strengthening the thighs and knees and keeping your spine strong and flexible. Forward folds can be brilliant for stress reduction, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Forward folds help us calm the mind and relieve tension in the spine, neck and back.

I often ask my students to lift the knee caps to activate the quads and notice how the stretch changes.
